Starting a garden can be overwhelming, especially with the amount of information and tools out there. I’ve found that it’s easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis by feeling like you have to learn all the various techniques before you start. In today’s post, we’re going to talk about how to plant seed tape and the benefits of using seed tape!
What Is Seed Tape?
Seed tape is a roll of eco-friendly, biodegradable paper with precisely-spaced seeds enclosed. The brand I’m using is from Burpee Gardening- you can find my exact one here!
How To Plant Seed Tape
- Step 1: Prepare the soil – Before we start sowing the seeds, we need to prepare the soil – you can plant in a raised garden bed (use code GraceGrownFarm for 10% off!) or directly in the ground. Make sure the soil is moist and free of any debris or rocks. You can also add some compost to the soil to help with the growth of the seeds.
- Step 2: Create a trench – create your rows about 1/4th inch deep.
- Step 3: Unroll the seed tape – Once the soil is ready, it’s time to unroll the seed tape. Burpee gardening seed tape comes in a roll, so carefully unroll it and lay it on the soil where you want to plant the seeds.
- Step 4: Cover with soil – Now that the seed tape is in place, gently cover it with a thin layer of soil. The seeds are already embedded in the tape, so there’s no need to worry about the spacing or sowing depth.
- Step 5: Water – After covering the seed tape with soil, it’s time to water it. Water the soil gently, making sure not to disturb the seed tape. You can use a watering can or a hose with a gentle spray attachment.
- Step 5: Watch the seeds grow – Now it’s time to sit back and watch the seeds grow. Keep the soil moist by watering it regularly, and in about a week, you’ll see the seedlings start to emerge from the soil.

- Precise spacing: Seed tapes are pre-spaced with seeds, making it easier to ensure consistent spacing between plants. This helps to prevent overcrowding and ensures that each plant has enough space to grow and thrive.
- Easy to plant: Seed tape is simple to use, even for novice gardeners. All you need to do is lay the tape on the soil and cover it with a thin layer of soil or compost. This eliminates the need for measuring and spacing out individual seeds, which can be time-consuming and frustrating.
- Reduced waste: Traditional seed packets often contain more seeds than you need, leading to waste. Seed tapes come pre-measured, so you only use what you need. This can save you money and reduce your environmental impact.
- Improved germination: Seed tapes are designed to provide optimal growing conditions for the seeds. The tape protects the seeds from birds and other pests, and helps to keep the soil moist, which can improve germination rates.
- Less thinning: Because seed tapes are pre-spaced, you won’t have to thin out seedlings as they grow. This can save you time and reduce the risk of damaging nearby plants during the thinning process.
