What Are Nasturtiums?
Nasturtiums are vibrant, easy-to-grow, edible flowers which makes them the perfect addition to your spring and summer garden. Nasturtiums grow well in containers, raised beds or even planted into the ground as a cover crop. This plant is often used as a trap crop, attracting aphids which can be detrimental to vegetable and fruit gardens.
Types of Nasturtiums
- Climbing Nasturtiums – these are best planted along a fence, trellised or in a hanging container where they have space to climb and grow their beautiful vines.
- Bushing Nasturtiums – these are best planted if your garden is limited on space or you’re using them for companion planting in a garden bed without a trellis.
Are Nasturtiums Perrenial or Annual Flowers?
Nasturtiums are not perrenial flowers, they are an annual plant which means you will need to re-plant your crop every year. However, I have had the flowers die back in a freeze and come back to life in sunny temperatures!
Are Nasturtiums Edibile?
YES, nasturtiums are edible. In fact, you can eat the entire plant. The edibility is likely one of the top reasons gardeners grow this variety, the vibrant color and peppery taste brings a unique life to dishes, especially soups and salads.

- Nasturtiums are an excellent trap crop. They attract pests like aphids which keeps them away from your vulnerable crops nearby.
